'Fire in the belly': Hull sets second national record in weeks

by

Rising Australian track star Jessica Hull has broken the national 1500m record just weeks after claiming the 5000m record.

Hull came achingly close to also being the first Australian woman to go under four minutes for the 1500m when she ran her record 4:00.42 while finishing third at a meet at the OlympiaStadia in Berlin.

"If I look back 12 months ago I never thought I would break an area record in the 5000 before the 1500 so to have the 1500 one now is pretty special, I think that is the one I was gunning for," Hull said.

"I tried not to clock-watch but I was very alert in the last 500m so I thought I was going to skip under the record but then it is like you are holding that hope you would run 3.59.99."

The 23-year-old said she had the "fire in our belly to go under four. I know next year it will be fire in the belly to try for it next year."

On August 14 at the Diamond League meet in Monaco, Hull broke the 5000m record when she ran 14:43.80.
