Two people were shot dead and six others were wounded near the Rutgers University campus early Sunday, according to reports.

The shooting popped off around 1:30 a.m. on Delafield Street, just two blocks from the New Brunswick, NJ, school, the Rutgers police department said in a statement posted on Facebook.

“In this incident, it is reported that an unknown perpetrator(s) fired several shots from a weapon striking individuals who were present,” the statement said. “Those injured were transported to an area hospital and injures are reported to be serious.”

“Information as to the description(s) of the perpetrator(s) is limited at this time and the investigation is active and ongoing.”

An initial investigation has determined “that there is no affiliation with Rutgers University or its students,” Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and New Brunswick Police Department director Anthony Caputo said in a joint statement, WABC-TV reported.

The shooting is believed to have happened at a house party, the outlet said.

The two victims who died were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Police have not made any arrests and have not identified the victims.
