Latest Tesla Model 3 Rumor Makes A Lot Of Sense

Time for a refresh?

Despite its rough start, the Tesla Model 3 has become a global sales success. It's not only Tesla's best-seller but also the world's best-selling EV of all time, at least so far. Production only got underway in mid-2017 and more than half a million examples have been sold. For all of its early success, there's already a rumor claiming Tesla has some design updates planned sooner than expected. Don't confuse this with last month's report regarding a redesigned frunk. This time, the changes will be much more noticeable.

According to Electrek, via leaked information from China, Tesla intends to give the Model 3 several Model Y updates.

Basically, the Model Y is an improved Model 3 even though they share a platform. The Model Y SUV entered production earlier this year and Tesla apparently wants to pass some of its upgrades to its sedan sibling. So, what's in store? The report claims items like new headlights and taillights, powered trunk gate, heat pump, double pane windows, and a body chrome delete option are all coming.

But perhaps the most interesting and substantial updates will be made inside. A new center console and steering wheel are likely, but it's unclear whether the console will be in the form of a new screen or whether it's simply a redesigned storage area between the front seats.

A few other slight refinement updates, such as reduced cabin noise, are also possible. Tesla has yet to confirm any of this but given the rate which automakers refresh vehicles lately, the Model 3 is due for some improvements. Plus, fresh competition from major industry players like Hyundai, BMW, and Volkswagen Group is coming soon and Tesla knows it needs to stay ahead of the curve.

Tesla never has played by the so-called automaker rules, among them formal model years. Chances are these expected Model 3 updates will simply appear on the official website without any official press release. Alternatively, they could be a part of Elon Musk's Battery Day announcements later this month.
