Watch Highlights As England Remarkably Defend 231 Against Australia
by CA EditorReigning world champions England, on Sunday, beat Australia by 24 runs in the second ODI to draw level in the three-match series. It looked like all over for the hosts when they ended their innings on a modest 231 for 9 on a tough pitch. However, the Eoin Morgan-led side came up with a stunning display with the ball to bowl out their opponents for 207 and keep the series alive.
Chasing 232 to win the series, Australia were cruising at 144-2 thanks to a stand of 107 between Aaron Finch (73) and Marnus Labuschagne (48) before Morgan brought back Jofra Archer (3-34) and Chris Woakes (3-32) to devastating effect. Both the pacers made an immediate impact to induce a collapse of four wickets for three runs in 21 balls.
Woakes removed Labuschagne lbw before bowling Finch and Glenn Maxwell, while Archer castled Mitch Marsh having accounted for David Warner and Marcus Stoinis earlier in the match.
Sam Curran (3-35) then put England on the brink of victory with two wickets in two balls before adding a third soon after. Alex Carey and Josh Hazlewood tried their best to take the visitors over the line before Adil Rashid accounted for the former to end the 31-run stand as well as the match.
Earlier in the game, England collapsed to 149-8, with leg-spinner Adam Zampa taking 3-36 before Adil Rashid and Tom Curran pushed them to 231-9. At one stage, the home side were reeling at 149 for 8 and the 200-run mark was looking like a distant dream for them.
However, a fighting ninth-wicket stand of 76 between Rashid (35no) and Tom Curran (37) helped England put up a respectable total on the board which eventually turned out to be more than enough.
