The comic said he cycles to the supermarket regularly but one recent outing resulted in the accident.

Connolly, 77, who is suffering from Parkinson's disease, said there was blood pouring from his eyelid and he looked like "a holy picture".

The Glasgow-born star described the incident while talking about his life in Florida to broadcaster Janice Forsyth on the Great Scot podcast.

He said: "Florida suits me lovely, it's relentlessly sunny and I wear white a lot and I cycle.

"I cycle to the supermarket. I'm going to get an electric bike because I'm fed up pedalling.

"I fell off and cut my eye, I was trying to get on and I made an a**e of it and fell on a parking place outside my house that's got gravel.

"I got three stitches on my eyelid. It's taught me to behave.

"It was very bloody, I was the centre of attention for a long time. It was all over my white linen, I looked like a holy picture."

Connolly said he had previously had a crash on his motor trike when travelling along Route 66 for a TV series.

He added: "I had an accident in America on my trike and I had to be helicoptered to the hospital. "I'm a great one for attracting attention."

Connolly's wife Pamela Stephenson recently gave his millions of fans an update on his health and said he is "doing well".

She posted a photo of him smiling as he cuddled his pet pooch who is called Rascal.

The couple are thought to have adopted the dog, who has suffered a broken leg, from a rescue centre.

They gave a home to another dog called Lincoln last year.

Connolly was diagnosed with Parkinson's eight years ago after a doctor spotted him walking strangely through the lobby of a hotel in Los Angeles.

He moved to Florida from the couple's previous home in New York after doctors advised him to live in a warmer climate.

The comedian announced his retirement from stand-up in 2018.
