Category 4 hurricane Teddy continues to move toward Bermuda

UPDATE 9/18/20 5AM:

Teddy remains a powerful hurricane over the Central Atlantic and large swells are forecast to spread across much of the western Atlantic increasing rip current threats on the east coast.

Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph with higher gusts. Teddy is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in strength are expected during the next day or so. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 230 miles.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 947 mb.

UPDATE 9/17/20 11 PM:

Teddy remains a category 4 storm with maximum sustained wind of 140 mph. Teddy is encountering southerly wind shear, but its not hurting the storm at all. Even though its eye remains ragged, it is expected to remain a major hurricane through early next week. Its moving to the NW at 12 mph and is expected to make a more northerly turn late this weekend. Teddy will impact Bermuda sometime Monday as possibly a major hurricane.

UPDATE 9/17/20 5 PM:

Teddy has now strengthened to a Category 4 storm with wind of 140 mph. It continues to move to the NW at 13 mph. Minimum central pressure has continued to drop throughout the day and is now at 945 mb. Teddy has a more symmetrical appearance and a well defined eye and is expected to strengthen a bit more before encountering wind shear and cooler waters produced by Paulette. Teddy will turn toward the north and could directly impact Bermuda on Monday before moving away from the United States.

UPDATE 9/17/20 11 AM:

Teddy is now classified as a major hurricane with maximum sustained wind of 120 mph. Its moving to the NW at 12 mph and central pressure has now lowered to 957 mb. Teddy is expected to make a turn to the north and affect Bermuda early next week. Teddy could strengthen into a Category 4 storm tomorrow before gradually weakening due to vertical wind shear and cooler waters upwelled by Paulette. A trough coming off the east coast of the United States will keep Teddy away from the U.S.

Teddy strengthens over the open Atlantic and is expected to become a major hurricane by Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 255 miles. The estimated minimum central pressure is 970 mb.

UPDATE 9/16/20 5AM:

Teddy is a Category 2 Hurricane and is forecast to become a Category 4 major hurricane later this week.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 100 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Teddy is likely to become a major hurricane later today and could reach category 4 strength on Thursday. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 175 miles.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 976 mb.

No changes in the track. Teddy will strengthen and head toward Bermuda by next week. The forecast calls for Teddy to become a major hurricane.

UPDATE 9/15/20 5AM:

Teddy is expected to become a large and powerful hurricane over the central Atlantic Ocean in the next few days.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 mph with higher gusts. Strengthening is forecast for the next several days, and Teddy is likely to become a hurricane late today and could reach major hurricane strength in a few days.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1001 mb.

UPDATE 9/14/20 11 PM:

Teddy will continue to strenghten this week but should avoid any land areas for now. It does appear that Bermuda may have to deal with a second significant hurricane in a week after Paulette lashed the area Monday. There is still some time before Teddy threatens, but forecasts call for either a direct hit or a close pass to Bermuda by early next week as a major hurricane.

Tropical Storm Teddy is becoming better organized but winds remain at 40mph. It is expected to move WNW as it is being steered by a large ridge in the central Atlantic. It will eventually turn to the NW in a couple days moving through a favorable environment. Teddy is expected to become a major hurricane in 4 to 5 days but remain over the Atlantic.

UPDATE 9/14/20 5AM:
Tropical Depression #20 strengthens into Tropical Storm Teddy and is expected to become a powerful hurricane later this week as it moves out over the open Atlantic.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 40 mph with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is anticipated, and Teddy is forecast to become a hurricane in a couple of days.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1004 mb.

T.D. #20 is moving WNW at 15 mph and is expected to become Tropical Storm Teddy Monday. Over the next couple days conditions will be conducive for rapid development and this system is forecast to become a major hurricane later next week. The good news is it will move northwest then north and not affect any land masses.

T.D. #20 is moving WNW at 12 mph and is expected to become Tropical Storm Teddy Monday. As it moves through the Atlantic, it will strengthen into a hurricane and possibly a major hurricane. The good news is it will turn to the northwest and north not affecting any land masses.

UPDATE 9/13/20 8 AM

TD 20 continues moving WNW at 10 mph. Winds remain at 35 with a pressure of 1005 mb. Forecast track remains mostly the same with a gradual turn toward the NW as the storm strengthens and finds a weakness in the Bermuda High, likely left open in the wake of Paulette and Rene. This will allow for an escape route for the storm to eventually turn north, northeast, then into the North Atlantic.

UPDATE 9/12/20 11 PM

Tropical Depression #20 continues to move to the WNW at 10 mph with maximum sustained wind of 35 mph. The depression is poorly organized now, but as the days progress this system should strengthen into a tropical storm and then a hurricane. It is expected to turn to the northwest then north in the central Atlantic not affecting any land masses.

FIRST UPDATE 9/12/20 5 PM

A new tropical depression has formed 2000 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is moving WNW at 9 mph. Conditions are favorable for development as this should become Tropical Storm Teddy sometime Sunday. This system is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Tuesday afternoon. The good news is this storm will curve to the northwest and almost due north by the end of next week and shouldn't impact any land areas.
