Helder Costa’s best performance for Leeds an exciting sign of what may be to come

by

One of the only players in Leeds United’s squad with prior experience of the Premier League heading into their opening day clash with Liverpool was also arguably one of the players the Elland Road faithful probably had the most concerns about.

Helder Costa’s first year with the Whites was mixed. There were certainly flashes of brilliance. But the Portuguese was overshadowed by his teammates on many occasions.

He ended the campaign with four goals and four assists in the league. Costa had technically been on loan, but it seems fair to say that he did not quite live up to expectations given that the Whites had already committed to spending £15 million on making his switch permanent this summer (fee reported by Leeds Live).

Despite that, he kept his place in Marcelo Bielsa’s side for the opening day trip to Anfield.

And in fairness to Costa, he went on to produce arguably his best performance for Leeds in their toughest fixture since he came to the club.

The Whites were beaten 4-3 on Merseyside. Nevertheless, Bielsa’s men have been widely lauded for a remarkable performance which saw them equalise three times against the Premier League champions.

Costa at home at English football’s top table

One of the goals came from a stunning pass from Costa. The Portuguese found Mateusz Klich in a sea of Liverpool players, and the midfielder took full advantage to volley home Leeds’s third goal.

Costa looked a threat throughout the game, particularly during the first-half. Liverpool seemed to give him space, and that allowed him to showcase his blistering pace and ability on the ball.

Other Premier League sides may choose to not give Costa so much time on the ball moving forward. But he certainly took full advantage and caused plenty of problems.

Like many of his teammates, Costa’s display confirmed that he has the quality to make an impact at the highest level.

And if anything, the former Wolves man looks as though he may be more at home playing in the top flight than he had been in the Championship.
