He is understood to have been nabbed by agents from the National Police in the airport’s boarding area amid fears he was about to get on a flight.

Spanish cops said the suspect - who was classified as “dangerous” and “armed” - is facing charges in relation to belonging to a crime gang, as well as illicit drug trafficking, narcotics and narcotic substances, and arms trafficking.

The offences are alleged to have been committed between June 2002 and this year 2020.

Police Scotland confirmed Hough, of East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, had been held on a European Arrest Warrant over alleged organised crime and drugs offences.

Hough was then transferred to the local police headquarters where he was still being held today.

A report in Spain read: “As stated in the judicial inquiry, the British defendant is charged with the crimes of belonging to a criminal organisation, illicit drug trafficking, narcotics and narcotic substances, and arms trafficking.

“The illegal activities were committed between June 2002 and this year 2020.”

It is not known how long Hough had been in Spain before being arrested.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We can confirm a 40-year-old man was arrested in the Malaga area in Spain on a European Arrest Warrant on Friday, September 11, in connection with organised crime and drugs offences.

“Officers from Police Scotland are continuing to liaise with the relevant authorities.”
