Thief steals SUV from West Side dealership, crashes two blocks away
by Tina Moore and Jorge Fitz-GibbonCops are looking for a bungling car thief who busted out of a Hell’s Kitchen car dealership behind the wheel of a stolen 2020 Land Rover — only to crash into a median two blocks away.
Police said the unidentified crook, who was caught on surveillance footage, broke into the Mopar Service Center at 630 West 55th Street shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday.
He allegedly went to the fifth floor of the building, brought the vehicle down an elevator, and crashed through a garage door and out onto the street, sources told The Post.
But he only got as far as 57th Street, where he crashed the Land Rover on the West Side Highway. He abandoned the vehicle and ran off towards 56th Street, sources and police said.
Cops are asking anyone who can identify the alleged thief from surveillance photos and videos to tip off police.
Last week, a pair of kids stole two buses from a lot in Red Hook, Brooklyn, by plowing one through a gate there. It was unclear if the incidents were related.
