Delivery Hero partners with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to integrate a donation feature
by Charlotte TuckerDelivery Hero, a leading food delivery platform who we recently featured in our article Glovo vs. Deliveroo vs. Delivery Hero: Battle of the food delivery scaleups, has today announced a global partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). The partnership will roll out the WFP’s ‘ShareTheMeal’ donation feature to Delivery Hero’s delivery platforms in Austria, Bulgaria, Finland, Malaysia, Norway, Romania and Sweden, so customers can support the fight against global hunger at the tap of a finger. The donation feature is also planned to launch in additional markets shortly.
Delivery Hero, founded in 2011 in Berlin by Niklas Östberg, is currently the largest global food network (outside of China), operating in 40+ markets and over 600+ cities, via a number of local brands. The team has grown into a company with 27K+ person team, with around 1.5K employees in their Berlin HQ alone. It’s no surprise, then, that the WFP has chosen this far-reaching delivery company to be their partner in rolling out their ‘ShareTheMeal’ donation feature.
In fact, Delivery Hero also has its own commitments to maximizing its positive impact on local communities, aiming to donate 10 million meals by the end of 2021. By entering into a partnership with the World Food Programme, Delivery Hero can now also empower its customers to give back to society and donate food to people in need by connecting them to a cause they care about.
The feature to be integrated into Delivery Hero’s apps is called ‘ShareTheMeal’ – a WFP initiative and app that enables people to help feed hungry families around the world by making a donation. Since launching in 2015, ShareTheMeal has engaged over 3 million users to fundraise around €35 million to support a variety of WFP operations across the world.
Christian von Hardenberg, CTO at Delivery Hero, commented: “Our team at Delivery Hero is always aiming to deliver product and tech innovations. We are now putting our experience and expertise to the service of those in need by integrating ShareTheMeal, a meal donation functionality, directly in our local apps. Tech teams from both Delivery Hero and ShareTheMeal have worked hard to build a seamless product that is scalable and can be further rolled out to more of our apps in the future.”
Dominik Heinrich, Director of Innovation at WFP, said: “From all of us at WFP, we are proud of Delivery Hero’s commitment to fighting global hunger. This partnership is built on a shared vision of engaging people around the world to become the generation that reaches a world without hunger. We work hard to ensure those most vulnerable have access to the right nutrition, each and every day. With the help of Delivery Hero, we will be one step closer to reaching zero hunger.”
Massimiliano Costa, Head of ShareTheMeal, added: “Collaborating with Delivery Hero is a great example of what we can achieve when partnering together with companies trying to make a difference in the world. We are thrilled to count on Delivery Hero’s strong commitment and innovation capabilities to implement our donation feature into their widely used delivery apps. As part of their everyday delivery experience, customers now have the opportunity to help hungry families in some of the most dramatic food crises in the world.”
