Marvin Andrews in Rangers title claim as former defender felt divine intervention in Helicopter Sunday drama

The centre-back famously refused to have surgery on a cruciate ligament injury.

Marvin Andrews believes Rangers wouldn't have won the title on Helicopter Sunday if he had agreed to have cruciate ligament surgery earlier in the season.

During the 2004-05 season the centre-back suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament, and was told he would require surgery.

However, the Trinidad international famously refused to go under the knife, stating his belief that God would heal him as his side battled Celtic for the title.

The defender missed just one game as Alex McLeish 's side won the SPL, and feels if he'd followed medical advice the dramatic last-day title win may not have happened.

Andrews explained on Go Radio: "You talk to the physios, the docs and the management.

"My faith and my trust in God is so high, it's the main part of my life and I don't shy away from that whatsoever.

"All of what the doctors were saying was true, I needed surgery if I wanted to play.

"But at that specific time it wasn't God's plan for me to have surgery.

"The reason why I say that was because of two things.

"If I had the surgery, we'll never know the answer until we all die and get to heaven and God tells us what happened, but if I had the surgery Rangers probably wouldn't have won the league in 2005 and my country probably wouldn't have made the World Cup in 2006.

"So in that same time when I didn't have the surgery I went on to help Rangers win the league, dramatically on Helicopter Sunday.

"Then later on in November I helped my country, Trinidad and Tobago qualify for their first ever World Cup.

"I put all my faith and trust in God.

"Some people thought I was crazy, they thought I was a madman.

"I don't blame them for that, because the thing that I did was something people have never heard of before.

"I just told them: 'no, God said I'm not going to take the surgery, He is going to heal my knee going to heal my knee'. That was it."
