IPL 2020: Three Captains Who Can Lose Their Leadership Position Due To Unsuccessful Results In The Tournament
by SANDIPAN GHOSHThe United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host the entire IPL 2020 that will run between 19th September and 10th November 2020 in three different venues.
Like every year, all the franchises are hopeful to make a good start in the upcoming IPL 2020 and achieve the best result in this tournament. But while eight teams are participating in this tournament, only one side will have the last laugh at the end of this tournament.
While there are few IPL captains whose leadership futures of their side are not depended on the team’s performances in the IPL 2020, some IPL skippers’ leadership futures likely have the opposite status.
Here we are talking about three IPL captains who can lose their leadership position due to unsuccessful results in IPL 2020
KL Rahul (Kings XI Punjab)
Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) have appointed KL Rahul as their new captain for the IPL 2020. It will be the first time when Rahul will lead an IPL team. Rahul is the most in-form batsman of this team as he not only finished as the most run-scorer for this side in the last two seasons, but he was the third and second most run-scorer in IPL 2018 and IPL 2019 respectively.
KXIP have never won the IPL trophy while they finished as the runners-up in the IPL 2014. But after the IPL 2014, they have never advanced to the playoffs. Though it is expected that the franchise will be very supportive for their new captain, due to their consistent struggling performances in the recent period, they may go with another leadership option in future if Rahul fails to bring the better results for the side in the IPL 2020.
Dinesh Karthik (Kolkata Knight Riders)
After Gautam Gambhir left Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before the IPL 2018 auction, KKR appointed Dinesh Karthik as their captain for the IPL 2018 edition, who just joined that side. Karthik-led KKR was the third-best side in the IPL 2018 but the fifth-positioned side in the IPL 2019 just missed out to advance for the playoffs in the last edition.
KKR weren’t consistent enough in the IPL 2019, and many blamed their team and batting order selections for their tougher IPL 2019 journey. So, Karthik had to face major blame for KKR’s weaker performances in the IPL 2019. Surely, the wicket-keeper batsman has to improve his leadership skills during the IPL 2020 where he has to make wiser decisions to prove himself. But if he fails in the forthcoming IPL tournament, he may have to lose his captaincy role from this team, especially when England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan is currently in the KKR squad.
Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore)
Though the Indian captain Virat Kohli hasn’t won any international tournament yet, his national team is very consistent in most of the formats. However, after finishing as the runners-up in the IPL 2016, Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have never finished upper the 6th position in an IPL edition.
Surely, the RCB captain Kohli is under pressure at the present moment. Though he is one of their best batsmen, where he has maintained his familiar consistent form, his leadership haven’t guided the team to their deserving position after the IPL 2016.
While the cricket world is expecting some positive results from the Kohli-led RCB in the IPL 2020, the franchise will be very disappointed if they don’t get the better result in the forthcoming season too. In that poor case, Kohli may have to lose his leadership job from the team, especially when the team has AB de Villiers, Aaron Finch like experienced international captains.
