Daniel Johnson Rangers transfer update as Alex Neil breaks silence on Ibrox target's mystery Preston absence

The Jamaican wasn't involved as Preston were beaten by Swansea on Saturday.

Alex Neil insists he'll leave people to make up their own minds on why Daniel Johnson was left out of the Preston squad on Saturday.

The midfielder is wanted by Rangers, although no official bid has been lodged for the 27-year-old by the Ibrox club.

The Jamaican didn't even make the bench for North End's first game of the season and that sparked further rumours that he is edging closer to a move north of the border.

With just a year left on his contract at Deepdale, Rangers hope a fee of around £2million will be enough to sign him, although Preston crave a higher fee.

Neil refused to be drawn on Johnson's future, though, in the wake of the 1-0 defeat to Swansea.

The former Hamilton Accies boss said: "There is no latest.

"I'm not going to discuss any individual player's situation, that isn't fair.

"People will jump to their own conclusions and don't really understand the situation.

"I'm not going to comment on it."

Johnson joined Preston for just £50k in January 2015 and has scored 41 goals in 204 games for the Championship outfit.

He started his career at Aston Villa and had loan spells at Yeovil, Chesterfield and Oldham before switching to Deepdale.

Steven Gerrard is desperate to bring another midfielder to the club, with injuries set to rule Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack out over the next few weeks.
