Motorists to Dig Deeper as New Fuel Prices Announced

by

The government, through the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on September 14, announced new fuel prices following its monthly review.

Motorists whose vehicles operate on super petrol in Nairobi will pay more for fuel with the prices increasing by Ksh1.48 as diesel and kerosene decreased by Ksh0.12 and Ksh0.50 per litre respectively.

In accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019, Legal Notice No. 196 of 2010 and Legal Notice No. 26 of 2012, the EPRA calculates the maximum wholesale and retail prices of petroleum products.

Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Ksh105.43, Ksh94.51 and Ksh83.15 respectively in Nairobi and Ksh103.05, Ksh92.15 and Ksh80.78 in Mombasa.

In Eldoret, Petrol will retail at Ksh106.07, Diesel Ksh95.36 and Kerosene 84.02 respectively.

The authority took into account the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products.

The regulator explained that the changes in this month’s prices were as a consequence of the average landed cost of imported Super Petrol increasing by 2.65% from US$ 319.23(Ksh34,652.42) per cubic metre in July 2020 to US$ 327.69 (Ksh35,570.75) per cubic metre in August 2020.

Diesel decreased by 1.02% from US$ 333.27 (Ksh 36,176.46) per cubic metre to US$ 329.88 (Ksh 35,808.47) per cubic metre in the average landed cost.

EPRA stated that the price of Kerosene also decreased by 2.06% from US$ 288.01 (Ksh31,263.49) per cubic metre to US$ 282.09 (Ksh 30,620.87) per cubic metre.

The new prices shall be effective from September 15 to August 14, 2020.

The previous month's review saw the prices rise with petrol, diesel and kerosene retailing at Ksh 103.95, Ksh 94.63 and Ksh 83.65 respectively in Nairobi.

Earlier in August 2020, Mueni Mutunga was installed at EPRAs Director General in acting capacity by the board replacing Pavel Oimeke.
