2020 UTME: JAMB Warns MAPOLY, Other Institutions Against Admission Outside CAPS

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has warned Institutions in the country against granting admissions to students outside the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

Pro. Oloyode stressed on the CAPS system on Wednesday, September 9, while receiving the Management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in his office, Naija News understands.

The JAMB registrar described as illegal and unacceptable any admission process outside the CAPS, reiterating the need for all tertiary institutions in the country to utilise the CAPS system in their admission processes as well as comply with other guidelines governing the conduct of admissions.

Oloyode in this week JAMB weekly publication from his office which was released on Sunday, September 13, pointed out that the automation of admission processes under the CAPS platform was designed to enable tertiary institutions conduct seamless admissions devoid of human interference.

According to him, “CAPS makes all stakeholders in the conduct of admissions active players, gives candidates equal opportunity to compete with their peers the choice of accepting or rejecting an offer of admissions, and restores integrity, fairness and credibility to the admission process.”

The Board had faulted MAPOLY admissions exercise and consequently queried the entire process because the institution could not meet the minimum expected standards allowable and insisted that the right thing must be done
by the institution, while also urging its Management to make full disclosure of what they had done in terms of
admissions in recent time for them to be guided.

The publication stated that “the Registrar restated the readiness of the Board to render necessary assistance to all institutions. He, however, maintained that the support of the Board is contingent upon transparency and fairness. He added that the Board fully acknowledged the peculiar nature of each institution but stated that such should not be an excuse to breach lawful processes.”

Responding to the allegations by the Board on MAPOLY admission exercise, the Ag. Provost of the Institution, Dr Adeoye Odedeji, promised to address all the issues raised and revert to the Board for necessary approvals.

Odedeji commended the Registrar for instituting a new admission regime through CAPS stating that its introduction was for the benefit of all tertiary institutions and the education sector in general. He explained that what happened was not deliberate; rather, the institution’s faulty interpretation of certain provisions of the admission guidelines was responsible.

He said, “This meeting has given us the necessary education as to what should be done to not only comply with the rules and improve the image of the institution but also to legitimately enhance our revenue base.”
