Bill Wyman Auction Breaks Record For Most Expensive Bass, Amp, Toilet Seat Cover

by

The former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman sold off a number of his archival items at auction this past weekend, and some of those items made a whole lot of money. Wyman now has a curious set of records to his name. He has sold the most expensive bass, amp, and toilet seat cover at auction.

Rolling Stone reports that Wyman, who played in the Stones from 1962 to 1993 and who recently made a full recovery from prostate cancer, sold more than 1,000 items from his personal archives through Julien’s Archives this past weekend. Wyman sold instruments, costumes, awards, personal items, and a whole lot of other things.

The big item in the auction was Wyman’s 196 Fender Mustang bass, which he used on Stones records in 1969 and 1970. That sold for $384,000 — a whole lot more than the previous auction record-holder, a left-handed Hofner bass that had been presented to Paul McCartney in 1964. The McCartney bass fetched a mere $204,800 in a 2013 auction. Pocket change! (Wyman also sold a 1968 Gibson Les Paul Standard Model Gold Top guitar for $704,000.)

Wyman also sold his 1962 Vox AC30 Normal amplifier, which he brought with him when he first auditioned for the Stones. It sold for $106,250. The previous record-holder was Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, who sold two amps for $77,000 at a 2019 auction.

Also, Wyman sold a plush yellow toilet seat cover with the Stones’ tongue logo on it. The toilet seat cover brought in $1,142, which Rolling Stone says is a new record. (Rolling Stone doesn’t say what the previous toilet-seat cover record-holder is.) Someday soon, some rich guy is going to excitedly tell his party guests that he has the world’s most expensive toilet seat cover.
