MIKEL ARTETA RESPONDS TO CEBALLOS AND NKETIAH PRE-MATCH INCIDENT

Arsenal transfer roundup: Odsonne Edouard bid as Lacazette provides update on future

The latest transfer gossip from around the Emirates after Mikel Arteta's side began their Premier League campaign with an impressive win over Fulham

While Arsenal started their Premier League season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Fulham, behind the scenes the transfer rumour mill continued to turn.

Mikel Arteta, in his first summer transfer window as Gunners boss, is looking to retool his squad ahead of a hopeful top-four challenge.

This has already included signing Gabriel Magalhaes, who netted on his debut, and Willian, who provided two assists, but there is much more work to be done.

Further new signings are needed, and Arteta has said he would like to add more to the squad, but there is also a raft of squad players who could be sold over the next few weeks to ease Arsenal 's bloated wage bill.

Here is the latest transfer news regarding potential incomings and outgoings at the Emirates.

After a superb end to last season following Bernd Leno’s knee injury, Emiliano Martinez is on the verge of an Arsenal exit. A £20million bid from Aston Villa was accepted this weekend.

As reported by the Telegraph, the Argentine shot-stopper underwent a medical on Saturday afternoon after not travelling with the first team to Craven Cottage. He is set to start for Dean Smith’s side in their season-opener against Sheffield United this weekend.

Throughout the summer, there was ample discussion regarding the future of Arsenal’s goalkeeper position.

Leno had seemingly solved the problem with almost two years of superb performances. Yet after he suffered injury against Brighton, Martinez produced a string of excellent displays and some suggested he had done enough to unseat the German entering this season.

With Leno now fit, though, Arteta has decided that he is the club’s number one. Martinez was eager to find first-team football as he looks to earn the starting job for Argentina, and requested a move. With Villa having met Arsenal’s valuation, the deal is expected to be completed imminently.

Lacazette 'happy' at Arsenal

Following an opening-day strike against Fulham - the second time Alexandre Lacazette has netted the first goal of a Premier League campaign - the French striker reiterated his desire to remain in north London.

Lacazette has been linked with an exit this summer. At 29 years old and with two years remaining on his contract, there have been suggestions Lacazette could be offloaded to Atletico Madrid as the Gunners look to reshape their squad.

A departure is not Lacazette’s thinking however, as he revealed to the media after the 3-0 win.

“I am really happy,” he said. “It's only the press that says I'm not happy. From the beginning I've said I am happy at Arsenal and I want to play and win titles. We won a title last month so I am happy with Arsenal.”

Arsenal have made an offer for Celtic centre forward Odsonne Edouard, who could be a potential Lacazette replacement at the Emirates if he is moved on.

Per the Irish Mirror, the Gunners have tabled a £22.5m bid as they consider life without the France international.

Edouard struck 28 goals last season and 23 the year before. He has been prolific for Celtic, who seemingly have good links with Arsenal having sanctioned the sale of Kieran Tierney last summer.

Still only 22, Edouard has been tipped for big things, but Neil Lennon is keen to tie him down to a new contract.

The Celtic boss said: “I’d love to give him a new deal – I’d give him a five-year deal tomorrow. If there’s something in the offing then brilliant.”
