Constitution review: We are not under pressure from anyone, Omo-Agege says

- Deputy Senate president Omo-Agege has restated the commitment of the Senate to review the 1999 constitution

The deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has vowed that the constitution review panel would not kill any of the constitution alteration bills before it.

Omo-Agege is the chairman of the Senate Adhoc Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution.

In a statement released by his media aide Yomi Odunuga on Sunday, September 13, Omo-Agege promised that the Senate would recommend all the bills before it for consideration.

He added that the Senate in plenary would determine whether or not such proposals should be transmitted to state assemblies.

Legit.ng gathers that Senator Omo-Agege spoke at the weekend on The Platform, a current affairs programme on TVC.

The senator also clarified that members of the committee are not under pressure from external forces to do their biddings.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to take advantage of the window given by the committee for Call for Memoranda to submit their proposals on any of the 13 thematic areas to the panel.

The Delta Central lawmaker disclosed that besides the constitution alterations bills already referred to the panel, more proposals could surface on the floor, arising from memoranda submitted to the committee.

His words: "Any Nigerian who feels strongly about any issue that ought to be addressed in this exercise, has a right within the time stipulated to put their thoughts in writing by way of a memo and submit same to us.

"Upon receipt of that, we will meet as a committee, set up some sub-committees within the main committee that will go to each of the geopolitical zones. There they will reach out and ask people to step forward and speak to the memo that they have already submitted to us."

The constitution review committee had last week shifted the deadline for submission of memoranda from September 11 to September 25, 2020.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Nigeria may be heading for major constitutional changes as the Nigerian Senate committee on constitutional review began work.

The committee has received at least 50 memoranda submitted by individuals and groups.

The groups that submitted their memoranda included the pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere and its Niger Delta counterpart, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and Coalition of Federalists for Good Governance (CFGG).
