Phillips, Townsend and Zohore: West Brom's injury situation ahead of Harrogate

Albion’s medical team will be hoping that attendees of the club treatment room are kept to a low number - or none at all, where possible

by

Slaven Bilic will be hoping that injuries within his West Brom squad will be limited to a bare minimum as he leads the Albion into their Premier League campaign.

Knocks and niggles do tend to be part and parcel of football; players will inevitably miss matches because of injuries suffered, with varying degrees of severity and enforced spells on the sidelines.

There are, at least, eight less matches in the top flight season than the gruelling campaign they had to come through in the Championship last season, but this term will be no less testing on the body.

Still, Albion’s medical team will be hoping that attendees of the club treatment room are kept to a low number - or none at all, where possible.

Conor Townsend

Injury : Ankle

Estimated return: Unknown

Townsend is doubtful for the opener with Leicester having seen his pre-season interrupted by an ankle injury.

The left-back played no part in the friendlies with Nottingham Forest and Brighton after suffering a problem in the promotion winning match against QPR.

What Bilic said: “Conor is good. It was a very strange one, from QPR still. It was a sore ankle. Everything is clean, he’s started to train with us this week so he’s not in an ideal fitness situation.

“The most important thing with Conor is that he’s pain free now. Conor is the player that can quickly become fit - he doesn’t need a long, long time to come to the level of fitness that is required for the games.”

Kenneth Zohore

Injury : Calf

Estimated return: Unknown

Zohore, who has been linked with the exit door, hasn’t played any part for Albion at all since the defeat to Brentford in June.

That wasn’t injury related, however, more down to Bilic’s selection decisions, but he did collect a calf problem in pre-season and hasn’t partaken in any games.

What Bilic said : “Kenneth Zohore still has a calf [injury]. He’s still injured, he’s not training with us.”

Matty Phillips

Injury : Back

Estimated return: Could be involved against Harrogate in the EFL Cup

Phillips has featured in pre-season but suffered a set-back just before the kick off of the league season when he felt a twinge in his back.

What Bilic said: “Matty on Saturday morning, he got up and felt his back, so he wasn’t 100%. It is nothing serious, but that’s why he wasn’t in the squad.”
