Liverpool under-23s kicked off their league campaign with a solid 1-0 win over Everton in the mini-derby on Sunday. Barry Lewtas oversaw the victory with Jake Cain’s goal coming after just two minutes.

Neil Mellor was at the game as a co-commentator for LFCTV and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was the man he selected for special praise after the contest.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 goalkeeper was inspired against the Everton youngsters making several good stops to keep the contest in Liverpool’s favour.

After the game, Mellor took to Twitter to give an assessment of the contest and in doing so he heaped praise on the 21-year-old, calling his performance superb.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a decent campaign last season playing three times in the EFL Cup and once in the FA Cup, featuring on the bench in the Premier League on seven occasions.

With Alisson Becker and Adrian keeping the gloves warm for the first-team, all Kelleher can do is continue to shine for the under-23 ranks.

The youngster looks to have all the attributes to one day challenge for a place in Jurgen Klopp’s team and more performances of this nature will help.

Liverpool have allowed a lot of youngsters to go on loan in the past and it remains to be seen whether Klopp might do the same with Kelleher.

It would be a risk given that he’s the third choice for the first-team so if anything does happen to Alisson or Adrian he might have to step into the breach.

He might benefit from regular men’s football, although all he can do whilst he’s at Liverpool is continue to impress in Lewtas’ team.
