Top PSL Coach Questions ‘Easy’ Club Sale Process

After a second PSL top-flight status was sold in quick succession, a top PSL coach has questioned the process of acquiring a team status and erasing years of history.

The top-flight status of Bidvest Wits was sold to businessman Masala Mulaudzi who is the owner of Tshakhuma Tsha Mandzhivandila, in a move that shocked the local football fraternity. The sale of Highlands Park’s Premier Soccer League status to Tim Sukazi, which is yet to be ratified by the league, is the second club sale.

Like Wits coach Gavin Hunt, Highlands Park coach Owen Da Gama is likely to join the unemployment line in the coming days despite having one year left on his contract with the Tembisa outfit.

According to reports, Sukazi has filled the TS Galaxy head coaching position with former coach Dan Malesela, who led the club to victory in the Nedbank Cup in 2018, while there has been no word on the future of Mabhuti Khenyeza - who has been in charge of the Rockets for the 2019/20 campaign.

Speaking to the Siya crew, Da Gama has questioned the process of club sales in the country, calling for stringent laws to be implemented in this regard.

“I understand the financial aspect of these deals, but stricter laws needs to be implemented. I was deeply disappointed by the sale of the club. The league needs to look into this thing and bring in new laws so it’s not that easy to rewrite history,” he said.

The 59-year-old reveals that the bigger picture needs to be taken into consideration, more especially the livelihoods of club staff after the club is sold.

Da Gama also highlighted his technical team, of which Allan Freese has already joined AmaZulu, and having to be without an income as they look for new employment.

“What happens to people who will be unemployed after this? I mean I’m lucky that I still have a year left on my contract, but what about the others? We need to start thinking about this,” Da Gama added.

Da Gama is set to meet with new owner Tim Sukazi in the coming days where he will learn his fate at the club. He also revealed that no less than three PSL clubs have enquired about his services.
