Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

Sir David Attenborough has left everyone in tears with his documentary on extinction as he said he might not be here to witness humanity save the planet.

The nature expert made a desperate plea for people to change their ways during the hour-long show, as he fears the human race could see dire consequences from global warming and climate change.

And when closing up the episode, he made one final speech – and there wasn’t one dry eye watching.

Taking us back to 1992, the much-loved presenter explained how he visited a group of mountain gorillas, where a young female tried to pull off his shoe as he filmed her family.

‘One thing we do know, if nature is given the chance it can bounce back,’ he told those watching.

At the time, the now 94-year-old named his new found friend Poppy, and it turns out she went on to have babies of her own.

‘To see Poppy’s daughter and granddaughter thriving is thrilling,’ he beamed as the camera brought us back to nowadays. ‘It just shows what we can achieve when we put our minds to it.

‘I do truly believe that together we can create a better future.’

He paused for a moment, before landing the comment none of us wanted to hear.

‘I might not be here to see it,’ he pressed. ‘But if we make the right decision at this critical moment we can save our planet’s ecosystem, it’s extraordinary biodiversity, and all its inhabitance.

‘What happens next is up to every one of us.’

It was that moment that fans flooded Twitter with an outpouring of love for the star and shared their heartbreak through blurry eyes.

‘I can’t imagine a world without Sir David Attenborough in it. Such an important programme once again. We can all do more. #ExtinctionTheFacts #Extinction,’ one said while another wrote: ‘I couldn’t imagine a world without David Attenborough.’

Others felt the same, adding: ‘Sir David Attenborough saying “I do truly believe that we can build a better future. I may not be here to see it….” and you remember that he is 94 years old..’

While someone else said: ‘No Dave I can’t cope with hearing you say that.’

Extinction: The Facts is available on BBC iPlayer.
