Sun shines on Super Series stars
HOT prospects aiming to reach the highest level of Island cricket have begun preparations for a fast-paced season finale.
by Jason FoxOver 40 players, including some of Jersey’s top under-15s and members of the women’s squad, started gearing up for the inaugural four-team Fairway Super Series at FB Fields, having been selected by captains and mentors through a draft system last week.
The Beresford Street Kitchen Bandits, Shelter Trust Titans, Every Child Eagles and Lord Taverners Lightning will each be guided by one of Jersey’s men’s international squad – Chuggy Perchard, Jonty Jenner, Corey Bisson or Harrison Carlyon – as the Jersey Cricket Board looks to add strength to its future foundations.
‘The previous Super League was very much about club-level cricket and participation,' said JCB cricket development manager Lee Meloy. 'This is more about giving people who are already in the game the chance to perform at the next level – to show their skills against players of a similar standard and it’s good to see how they handle different pressures in what looks more like adult cricket.
‘It will be four games in a day over two weekends and it’s the culmination of the junior season. If we get this right we’ve managed to get in pretty much a full season of cricket, despite Covid.’
The first two rounds of games are due to be held this coming Sunday, with the third round and play-offs scheduled for Sunday 27 September.
