A Chesterfield FC pre-season friendly match has been called off after a member of the club's backroom staff tested positive for Covid-19.

The Spireites were set to visit Matlock Town on Tuesday, September 15 for a 7.30pm kick-off.

But the fixture will not be going ahead as planned after a member of Chesterfield’s first-team backroom staff tested positive for the virus.

A statement, posted on the Chesterfield FC club website yesterday, reads: "Tuesday night’s planned pre-season fixture at Matlock Town has been called off after a member of Chesterfield’s first-team backroom staff tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19).

"Discussions are taking place with Matlock Town officials to determine whether it would be possible to rearrange the fixture. A further announcement will be made in due course.

"Anyone who shows symptoms of coronavirus – such as a high temperature, a new, continuous cough and a loss or change to their sense of smell or taste – should arrange to have a test as soon as possible. For more information, please refer to the NHS website here."

Keith Brown, secretary/CEO of Matlock Town FC, also released a statement regarding the postponement, issuing advice for fans who had already purchased tickets.

A post on the club's website reads: "Our chief executive has just received a call from Chesterfield FC that a senior member of their backroom team has tested positive for coronavirus. Tuesday's match has now been postponed.

"The possibility of rearranging the match he's been discussed and further information will be advised in due course. Please retain the tickets you have purchased at this stage."
