Astronomically crescent of Hijri month of Safar will be born on Thursday: Qatar Calendar House

Doha: The Qatar Calendar House (QCH) has announced that according to the calculations by astronomers the crescent of the month of Safar for 1442 AH will be born on Thursday, Muharram 29, 1442 AH (Sep. 17, 2020) at 2:00 pm Doha local time (11:00 GMT).

Astronomer at Qatar Calendar House Dr Bashir Marzouq said that the crescent moon of Safar 1442 will disappear from the skies of Doha on Thursday at 5:54 pm, while the sun will set at 5:35 pm, which means the new crescent will set after sunset time by a period of 19 minutes in the skies of Doha, while this period will increase in the skies of Arab and Islamic countries as we move West.

He added that it will be impossible to see or monitor Safar crescent on Thursday with the naked eye.

Consequently, the first of Hijri month of Safar 1442 AH will be on Friday Sept. 18, 2020, and the Hijri month of Moharram 1442 AH will end on Sept. 17, 2020.

The Hijri calendar depends on moon's motion on its orbit around the earth while the Gregorian calendar depends on earth's motion on its orbit around the sun.
