Report: Tottenham reluctant to trigger Paulinho’s release clause

by

Tottenham Hotspur have been considering a potential move for Braga forward Paulinho in the last two weeks, but O Jogo reports that Spurs are reluctant to trigger the 27-year-old’s release clause.

It looks as though signing a new striker is set to be Jose Mourinho’s priority for the final weeks of the window.

The Tottenham boss confirmed, in comments reported by Football London, that his side need a new goalscorer following their defeat to Everton on Sunday.

And it appears that Paulinho may be one of the names on his radar.

According to O Jogo, contacts between the two clubs have been developing over the last fortnight. However, there appears to be an issue.

O Jogo reports that Braga do not plan to sell Paulinho for anything below his release clause, which is set at £27.7 million.

But the report adds that Tottenham are reluctant to pay that sort of price for the Portuguese. So it would appear that a move may be unlikely as things stand.

TBR View: Spurs stance unsurprising

It is going to be an incredibly difficult role for Mourinho to fill. Any striker coming in knows that Harry Kane will be first-choice. And that means, if they do not play in another position, they may not play an awful lot.

Paulinho is versatile. But it is little surprise that Tottenham are not keen to trigger his release clause.

Spurs have not been amongst the biggest spenders in the league this summer. So it would take some aback should Tottenham then pay almost £28 million on their backup striker.

Their stance may perhaps change as the window goes on and the deadline looms. But for now, it makes sense that Spurs may look elsewhere.
