On 14th June 2020, Sushant Singh Rajput was reported dead in his apartment in Bandra West, Mumbai. While initial claims by the doctors and police said the death was a suicide, the nation failed to believe so. In the initial reports, it was stated that the 34-year-old actor who starred in hit movies like ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’, ‘Chhichhore’, ‘Kai Po Che’, and ‘PK’, was reportedly suffering from depression and was also believed to be on antidepressants. However, these reports have been claimed to be false by his family members. Also, there was no suicide note found at his home.

Gradually, many developments took place in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case, and here is a timeline of the major events that took place since the day the actor died.

June 14: Sushant Singh Rajput died at his residence in Bandra, Mumbai. The actor was found hanging by his flatmate and creative manager, Siddharth Pithani, on Sunday morning. It was the domestic help that first spotted the body and informed the police.

June 15: The last rites of Sushant Singh Rajput were concluded at Pawan Hans crematorium in Mumbai’s Vile Parle. His father, sister, and a few of his friends attended his funeral.

June 18: Sushant’s ashes were submerged in the holy river Ganga in his hometown Patna, Bihar. On the same day, Sushant’s girlfriend and actress Rhea Chakraborty arrived at the Bandra police station to record her statement in regards to the death of the actor.

June 19: Leading the investigation further, the Mumbai Police sought details of contracts from Yash Raj Films for at least two movies that Sushant had signed with them. Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh also said that the police would probe all angles, including allegations of professional rivalries.

June 24: The final postmortem report signed by a team of five doctors was received by the Mumbai police. Reportedly according to the postmortem report, “No struggle marks or external injuries” were found on the actor’s body. The postmortem report also said to have mentioned the cause of death as asphyxia. But the report was never made public so nothing said to be written in it can be confirmed by us.

June 30: Sushant Singh Rajput’s co-star in his last film Dil Bechara, Sanjana Sanghi was interrogated by the Mumbai police at the Bandra police station. His family members also met with the police regarding the investigation.

July 6: Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali was questioned by the Mumbai police. During the interrogation, Bhansali revealed that Sushant was approached for films like “Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela” (2013), “Bajirao Mastani” (2015) and “Padmaavat” (2018) but he did not have dates.

July 11: The Mumbai Police recorded the statement of Salman Khan’s former manager Reshma Shetty who is one of Bollywood’s top celebrity managers. She was questioned for nearly five hours at the Bandra police station.

July 16: Actress Rhea Chakraborty posted a screenshot of receiving death threats from a user on social media. Taking to Instagram, she also revealed the identity of the user who goes by the name Mannu Rauut. Along with the picture of the threat, Rhea wrote that she kept quiet even when she was called “gold-digger, murderer, and slut-shamed”. She also called for a CBI probe in his death case by tagging Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Instagram.

July 17: Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said that the Mumbai Police is capable of handling the matter and there was no need for a CBI inquiry into the matter. He also said that the Mumbai police are also examining the business rivalry angle in the matter.

July 18: The Mumbai Police recorded a statement of Aditya Chopra, who was reportedly interrogated for over 4 hours.

July 24: Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara was released on the OTT Platform Disney Plus Hotstar.

July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged a letter by former Cabinet Minister Subramanian Swamy, requesting a CBI inquiry in the suicide case of Sushant.

July 27: The Mumbai Police recorded a statement of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt at the Santacruz police station.

July 28: The Mumbai Police recorded a statement of Apoorva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions.

July 28: Sushant Singh Rajput’s father lodged an FIR in Patna against 6 people including Rhea Chakraborty. In the FIR, Sushant Singh Rajput’s father also accused Rhea Chakraborty of transferring Rs 15 crores from the actor’s bank account and accused her of abetment to suicide. He even accused Rhea and her family members of stealing Sushant’s laptop, cash, jewelry, credit cards with PINs, etc. and threatening the late actor of making his medical reports public.

July 29: Reportedly forensic analysis revealed that the cloth believed to have been used by the actor to hang, could take his weight. In the same report, analysis of ligature marks found on his neck were also said to be pointing to the actor’s death is a case of suicide, rather than homicide. Again, the report has not been made public so nothing can be confirmed and this is as reported by media.

On the same day, KK Singh told ANI that the Mumbai Police was not registering an FIR in the matter and was instead forcing them to give the names of big production houses to get them involved in the case. He claimed that the matter was heading in a different direction under the Mumbai Police.

Actress Rhea Chakraborty also filed a petition in the Supreme Court on the same day and sought transfer of investigation in Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide case to Mumbai Police. This incident took place after the Patna police reached Mumbai in search of Rhea Chakraborty.

July 31: Rhea Chakraborty told the SC that she was in a “live-in relationship” with Sushant Singh Rajput and had left his house on June 8, which was just six days before the actor allegedly committed suicide at his Mumbai residence.

July 31: In a video statement released by Rhea’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde, Chakraborty said that she has full faith in the judiciary and that she will refrain from speaking about the allegations against her since the matter is sub-judice.

August 1: The Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar said that the government can initiate a CBI probe on the condition if the family of the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput demands it.

August 2: The Bihar Police traced the whereabouts of Chakraborty and sent a notice, asking her to cooperate in the investigation.

August 3: Mumbai Police Commissioner, Param Bir Singh, said they had no information on the whereabouts of Rhea Chakraborty, who is absconding ever since late actor’s father lodged an FIR against her. He also said that the actor was suffering from bipolar disorder for which he was on medication.

August 4: According to a Bihar police official, when the Mumbai Police didn’t cooperate and hand over important documents related to the case, they changed their strategy and started digging for evidence. The Bihar Police has prepared a file of evidence that includes 48-page bank transactions between Rhea and Sushant and a 13-page WhatsApp chat between the late actor and his ex-girlfriend Ankita Lokhande. Statements of 6 people and telephone conversations with a key witness are also part of that.

August 5: The Centre informed the SC that it has handed over the probe into Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput death case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). During the SC hearing on a plea filed by accused Rhea Chakraborty, solicitor general Tushar Mehta told the top court that the Centre has accepted the Bihar government’s request to conduct a CBI investigation of the case.

August 5: Bihar Police DGP Gupteshwar Pandey said that Rhea Chakraborty is absconding and not coming forward. His remarks came even as Chakraborty’s lawyer recently clarified that the actress is not ‘missing’. He said that Rhea had not been issued any summons by Bihar police.

August 19: The SC has ordered for a CBI investigation in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The top court stated that the FIR registered at Patna was correct and that the state of Maharashtra refused the option to challenge the order.

The Supreme Court has also instructed Mumbai police to hand over all the evidence collected to date to CBI. It also said that Bihar Government had the right to refer FIR lodged by Sushant’s father in Patna to CBI. “CBI will be competent to probe not only Patna FIR but also any other FIR related to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput”. SC also said that the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police conducting an investigation under Section 174 CrPC is limited as they registered only an accidental death report. The verdict of the Supreme Court shall ensure that no state police could interfere with the investigation in the case and CBI remains the sole authority to probe the case.

August 22: The central agency team, along with forensic experts, reached Sushant Singh Rajput’s residence to conduct an investigation. The cook, Neeraj, and flatmate, Siddharth Pithani also accompanied the CBI team.

August 24: The CBI team visited the Cooper Hospital to question the concerned doctors about Sushant Singh Rajput’s autopsy.

August 25: Siddharth Pithani, Neeraj Singh, and Deepesh Sawant were again called for questioning by the CBI.

August 27: The NCB filed a criminal case against Chakraborty and others to probe their alleged dealings in banned drugs. This instance emerged from an investigation that was being conducted into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The ED, which is probing a money-laundering angle into the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, obtained deleted WhatsApp texts after a forensic examination of Rhea’s phone. The deleted messages allegedly indicate dealings in banned drugs and chats about the procurement and consumption of these drugs.

The NCB Director-General, Rakesh Asthana filed a case after holding two rounds of meetings, after going through the evidence, and after obtaining a legal opinion.

August 28: Rhea Chakraborty appeared before the CBI for the first time.

August 29: Based on the request made by the CBI, the Mumbai Police provided security to Chakraborty as the actress earlier claimed that there was a threat to her and her family’s life.

August 30: The CBI called Rhea for questioning for the third consecutive day while her brother, Showik Chakraborty was summoned for the fourth day in a row for questioning in the case. Sushant’s manager, Samual Miranda, and domestic help Keshav also reached the guest house in the morning.

September 1: Rhea Chakraborty’s parents arrived at the DRDO guest house in Mumbai for questioning by the CBI.

September 2: Rhea Chakraborty’s father, Indrajit, was questioned by the CBI for the second consecutive day. He was interrogated for around 10 hours by the central agency team.

September 5: A Mumbai court on Saturday remanded Showik and Miranda, arrested in connection with the drugs probe linked to actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, to the custody of the NCB till 9 September.

The NCB arrested Dipesh Sawant in connection with a drugs probe linked to the actor’s death. The total number of people arrested in this “ongoing investigation” rose to seven.

September 6: Indrajit Chakraborty (Rhea’s father) issued a statement condemning the arrest of his son, Showik, in connection with drug abuse allegations surrounding actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.

Meanwhile, NCB also issued summoned to Rhea for joining the probe. The agency said it wants to confront Rhea with Showik, Miranda, and Sawant in order to ascertain their individual roles in this alleged drug racket after they obtained mobile phone chat records and other electronic data that suggested some banned drugs were allegedly being procured by these people.

Rhea’s lawyer Satish Maneshinde said, “Rhea Chakraborty is ready for arrest as this is a witch hunt and if loving someone is a crime she will face the consequences of her love. Being innocent, she has not approached any court for Anticipatory Bail in all the cases foisted by Bihar Police now with CBI, ED, and NCB.”

September 7: Actor Rhea Chakraborty on Sunday submitted an application with the Bandra police seeking a probe into Sushant’s sister Priyanka Singh and a doctor attached to a Delhi-based government hospital who prescribed him anxiety medicines.

In her police complaint, Chakraborty sought that an FIR should be registered under IPC, NDPS Act, and Telemedicine Practice Guidelines. She accused Priyanka Singh, Dr. Tarun Kumar of Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, and others of forgery and preparing of a “fake” prescription of medicines for anxiety for Sushant Singh Rajput.

September 8: Rhea Chakraborty was found contradicting her statement from the second day of her investigation with NCB. On the third day, she confessed of procuring drugs and admitted to consuming them with Sushant Singh Rajput.

Sushant’s father, KK Singh, filed a complaint to the Medical Council of India stating, “any consultation between Sushant Singh Rajput & Registered Medical practitioner Susan Walker was strictly confidential & disclosure of same would be misconduct under IMC regulation.”

Meanwhile, Rhea Chakraborty has been taken into NCB custody. According to several reports, she will spend the night in their custody and will then be sent to Byculla Jail tomorrow.
