West Ham are missing a trick not entering Chris Smalling race

by

West Ham United will reportedly consider making a new offer for Burnley’s James Tarkowski.

The Evening Standard claim the Hammers are mulling over the two-cap international, with the Clarets having supposedly already rejected an offer of around £30 million.

Money is tight for West Ham this window, and it could well be that Tarkowski simply proves too expensive for David Moyes.

It is somewhat surprising that the Irons have not registered interest in Chris Smalling, who is set to leave Manchester United after a successful loan move with AS Roma.

The star missed the club’s photoshoots for TV today according to the Daily Mail, indicating that he will not be at Old Trafford from 2020/21.

One can’t help but feel West Ham are missing a trick not getting involved, with Smalling surely fitting the bill as the experienced defender Moyes craves (Evening Standard).

TBR’s View – Smalling hijack needed

It seems Roma are the favourites to land Smalling after the success of his loan, but West Ham would be fools to ignore the situation.

Moyes wants a central defender with experience and 30-year-old Smalling has 219 Premier League appearances under his belt, and a further 44 in the Champions League.

Moyes even worked with the player during his brief stint as Manchester United manager, which could be significant if West Ham did move for him.

The Daily Mail are reporting United are holding out for £20 million, which actually does seem a reasonable price for someone who would undoubtedly improve West Ham’s defence.
