It's been a while since we've heard anything official on Ubisoft's open-world pirate adventure, Skull & Bones, but now the developer has provided an update on the game. Skull & Bones is being developed with a "new vision" in mind.

In a statement over on the Ubisoft website, Skull & Bones creative director Elisabeth Pellen said, "We know you've been waiting for news, so I'm thrilled to confirm this: production on Skull & Bones has been in full swing with a new vision. Our teams at Ubisoft Singapore are fully committed to launching the game, as well as supporting it for many years to come." The update follows a report from back in July that suggested Skull & Bones had been rebooted as a live service game. Although Pellen doesn't specifically say the game will be a live service title, it sure does sound like it will be.

The game was initially supposed to launch in 2018, but Pellen says the team "dreamt something bigger for Skull & Bones" and needed more time to work on the game. "Critical questions needed to be addressed over the past several months, such as: how do we modernize the classic pirate fantasy? How do we ensure a more immersive and visceral experience? How do we create cool and memorable moments in-game? For most of these questions to be answered, it was clear that we needed more development time," says Pellen.

The post goes on to say that Skull & Bones will not feature during today's Ubisoft Forward event, but Ubisoft is working on plans to present the new game in the future. Pellen says we'll see more on the new IP next year.

Although Skull & Bones won't be a part of tonight's Ubisoft Forward event, we can expect news on Immortals Fenyx Rising, Rainbow Six Siege and possibly a Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake.
