FIA investigates Lewis Hamilton for wearing Breonna Taylor T-shirt

Lewis Hamilton is being investigated by the FIA for wearing a T-shirt with a message about the shooting of Breonna Taylor at the Tuscan Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton, who won the race and is now one victory away from equalling Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 91 career wins, wore the T-shirt before and after the race in Italy.

On the front of Hamilton’s T-shirt were the words, ‘arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor’, while on the back there was a picture of Taylor with the message, ‘say her name’.

Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman, was shot and killed by police officers at her home in Louisville, Kentucky, in March.

One police officer involved was fired in June, while two other officers have been placed on ‘administrative reassignment’.

There have been no criminal charges filed against any of the three involved.

‘It took me a long time to get that shirt and I’ve been wanting to wear that and bring awareness to the fact that there’s people that have been killed on the street and there’s someone that got killed in her own house, and they’re in the wrong house, and those guys are still walking free,’ said Hamilton.

Hamilton is now facing an investigation by the FIA, who forbid drivers from making any kind of political statement during events.

One official told MailOnline that Hamilton had ‘crossed a line’ by wearing his T-shirt.

The 35-year-old could now face a fine from the FIA.

Meanwhile, Hamilton has been told by the FIA that his insinuation that race organisers endangered lives at the Tuscan GP is ‘offensive’.

Hamilton accused the FIA of trying to make Sunday’s race ‘more exciting’ after the safety car restart led to a major collision which resulted in four drivers pulling out of the race.

‘From an FIA perspective, safety is paramount, full stop, end of story,’ said FIA race director Michael Masi.

‘We are absolutely not trying to spice up the show. In my capacity as race director, my role is sporting integrity and safety and anyone that says otherwise to that is actually quite offensive.’
