Alex George sat in silence for five hours in agonising drive home after brother's death
by Charlotte Tutton, https://www.mirror.co.uk/authors/charlotte-tutton/Alex George shared emotional details about the heartbreaking moment he learned his younger brother had died.
The Love Island star's brother Llŷr, 20, took his own life in July after a battle with his mental health.
Alex revealed the devastating circumstances surrounding him finding out his brother had passed away, and the disbelief of what had happened.
What followed was a five-hour drive back from London to Wales, with Alex saying he and his other sibling Elliott remained in silence for almost the entire journey.
The silence was only broken when the distraught siblings screamed and cried, letting out their anguish over their sudden loss.
Speaking on TV for the first time since his loss during an appearance on Lorraine on Monday, Alex shared heartbreaking details about the recent death and how he will never get over losing his baby brother.
Alex shared his guilt as a doctor for not keeping him safe, as host Lorraine Kelly assured him there was nothing he could have done.
He said: "I was at a restaurant when I found out. I had a phone call from my dad and I could tell from the call he’d passed away, just that something bad had happened.
"When he said it was Llŷr, my world kind of ended in that sense, the world came down on my shoulders almost.
"My brother Elliott picked me up and drove me back to Wales."
On the agonising journey to their parents' house, the brothers went from complete silence, numb with shock, to screaming and crying over their unimaginable loss.
He said: "We sat in silence for like five hours, between each of us crying and shouting, letting out this anguish I guess, it was weird.
"I went into different parts of my mind, really dark parts to be honest. Just disbelief, I couldn't believe this had happened."
Sharing his guilt as someone who has often spoken out on mental health and encouraged people to not suffer in silence, especially men, Alex confessed he questioned what he could have done to help his beloved brother.
Alex said: "That's the hard thing, I felt tremendous guilt. I'm a doctor, I'm his older brother and I wanted to protect him, look after him, what could I have done differently?
"I am supposed to be a mental health advocate, so it was anguish to be honest, the worst thing, but as you say... mental health and psychical health are akin."
Speaking of the "immense" pain he is feeling, he revealed the loss had been "tough" on his family and his parents.
He said: "My life is before and after what happened, I realise that, I will never get over this."
Alex praised his mother and father for how they raised the family, revealing it was "tough" for them since Llŷr's death.
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
