Report: Spurs keen on Southampton’s Danny Ings; but doubt move could happen
by Jordan HarrisTottenham Hotspur are long-time admirers of Danny Ings, but Football London reports that Spurs are not optimistic that they will stand a chance of signing the Southampton striker this summer.
Ings went into this season off the back of his best league campaign to date. The England international scored 22 goals for the Saints in the top flight.
Unsurprisingly, it appears that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men want Ings to commit his future to the club. The Daily Mail recently reported that he was one of the players Southampton want to tie down to a long-term contract. His current £65,000-a-week deal has two years left to run.
But perhaps Spurs may be one of the sides monitoring how the reportedly-imminent talks progress.
Football London has suggested that Tottenham have had Ings on their radar for some time.
However, the report notes that Spurs believe that a move for the 28-year-old is highly unlikely this summer. His price-tag would likely be an issue, and it is thought that he may not be too interested in becoming Harry Kane’s backup.
TBR View: Striker search is always going to be problematic for Tottenham
Finding a new striker is going to be difficult for Tottenham. Signing a striker better than Kane is virtually impossible whatever budget Jose Mourinho has.
Meanwhile, convincing a striker of Ings’s calibre to make the switch is also tough when they know that they are not going to be first-choice.
Ings would be a fantastic addition for Spurs based on the form that he showed last season. But Tottenham fans would be forgiven for being just as pessimistic about their hopes as the club appears to be.
