Jermaine Jenas blown away by Everton star James Rodriguez

The Toffees put Tottenham to the sword on Sunday, largely thanks to the excellence of the Colombian.

Match of the Day pundit Jermaine Jenas has told BBC Sport that Everton signing James Rodriguez looked like a world-beater against Tottenham on Sunday.

The 29-year-old checked in at Goodison Park last week for a fee of £12 million from Real Madrid (BBC).

Having not played for quite some time having fallen out of favour at the Bernabeu, some supporters were intrigued as to how he might get on.

Supporters needn’t have worried, with the Colombia international showing exactly how good he could become in the blue of Everton.

Jenas, a former Tottenham and England midfielder, was desperately impressed with the new recruit.

He told the BBC: “Rodriguez looked an absolute world-beater for Everton on Sunday – and he’s almost exactly what Spurs haven’t got at the moment.

“He has got that star quality about him. The talk when Rodriguez signed was would he be quick enough or fit enough, but he has got the ability to see things before they happen.

“He just looked a class above.”

Rodriguez had lost his way badly at Real Madrid with Zinedine Zidane choosing to nudge him down his pecking order.

Everton landing the player is a massive coup and on this showing, he will be a tremendous signing for the Toffees.

Quality

Carlo Ancelotti will hold a firm desire to take Everton into Europe this season and players like Rodriguez will certainly help.

He was mesmerising at times against a hapless Tottenham who looked void of ideas.

It does offer the question as to why a club the size of Spurs weren’t in the race to try and land Rodriguez before Everton got the chance to do so.

Other clubs’ loss is Everton’s gain though and the 76-cap star looks like being a top signing for the club this season.
