5 reasons why Gary Breen's Celtic tirade does Scottish football the ultimate disservice
Shane Duffy apparently runs the risk of continuing to score goals for the club he loves
by Adam Miller, https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/authors/adam-miller/Another day, another pundit who's never played in Scotland talking down Scottish football.
This time it was Gary Breen, who warned Shane Duffy that he runs the risk of continuing to score goals for the club he loves.
He also cited Virgil van Dijk as a cautionary tale, presumably having stopped reading his Wikipedia page at the Southampton bit.
Speaking on OTB Sports, Breen said: "If he (Duffy) doesn't score double figures, I'll be amazed.
"This is a brilliant move for Celtic but the quality of player he is playing against now will be a big concern for Ireland.
"He is not going to be up against quality centre-forwards. There is no centre-forward in Scotland who would play in a Premier League team. None.
"He is going to be playing against lesser quality and that is a concern.
"If you consider that he has played in the Premier League, he was playing against top-class strikers there all the time. He can cope against these players.
"He might pick up a few bad habits [in Scotland], not because he is lazy but that he isn't up against quality centre-forwards.
"Even the likes of Virgil van Dijk came down to Southampton from Celtic with dreadful habits. He wouldn't get into the right positions quickly enough because he didn't have to with Celtic."
Here are five reasons why Breen was wrong.
1) Virgil van Dijk
"Even the likes of Virgil van Dijk came down to Southampton from Celtic with dreadful habits". He was in the habit of being the best defender in the country, and maintained that habit in England.
2) Odsonne Edouard
"There is no centre-forward in Scotland who would play in a Premier League team". Maybe he thinks Odsonne Edouard, who has been linked with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leeds United, Leicester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur during his time at Celtic, is actually a winger.
3) Alfredo Morelos
And maybe he sees Alfredo Morelos, who has been linked with Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United as more of a deep-lying midfielder.
4) Andy Robertson
And Kieran Tierney. And Victor Wanyama. And Paolo Di Canio. And Kasper Schmeichel. And Mikel Arteta. And Stiliyan Petrov. Etc etc.
5) Gary Breen's Wikipedia Page
You don't earn 63 caps for the Republic of Ireland without being a decent player.
You can, however, do so without playing for any clubs that are even remotely comparable in stature to Celtic. Coventry City, West Ham United, Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers are all proud clubs. They're not Celtic.
