Pradosh Vrat significance
The Pradosh (Pradosham) Vrat which concurs with Tuesday (Mangalwar) is called Bhauma Pradosh. On this day, people observe a vrat and pray to Lord Shiva to seek his blessings for a blissful life. They worship him to rid themselves of all the troubles. Therefore, devotees perform puja and subsequently break their fast. It is believed that on Trayodashi Tithi, Lord Shiva saved the Deva Loka from the Asuras who created havoc and disrupted the peace.
Pradosh Vrat dos and don'ts
- Rise early and take a bath.
- Wear clean/fresh clothes.
- Maintain celibacy.
- Do not eat onion, garlic, meat and do not consume alcohol or tobacco. Eat Sattvic food. Avoid consumption of rice, wheat and lentils. You may, however, eat fruits and foods prepared with vrat ingredients such as Kuttu, Singhare, Buckwheat (Sama) and Sabudana etc.
- Do Dhyana (meditation).
- Do Sankalpa (vow to observe the vrat with the utmost sincerity).
- Chant OM Namah Shiva, read the Shiva Purana and the Shiva Chalisa.
- Take a bath before performing puja in the evening.
- Do the Shodshopchar Puja and read the vrat katha.
- Perform the aarti and Kshama Yachana (ask for forgiveness for any mistake you may have committed while performing puja).
- You may then break your fast.
